When a new camera lands on my desk, I typically approach it with measured expectations. Yet sometimes, a piece of gear comes along that defies convention so boldly it demands an entirely fresh perspective. The Sigma BF is precisely that kind of device. Having spent a very short time with this striking mirrorless marvel, I can say this is one of the most thoughtfully designed and satisfying cameras I’ve ever held. That impression aligns with Sigma’s broader direction in 2025.

Designer: SIGMA

Announced in Tokyo, Sigma’s revitalized visual identity brings its design philosophy into sharp focus. The updated branding isn’t a surface-level refresh—it mirrors the same commitment to clarity, reduction, and form that defines the BF. Alongside new products and lenses, it signals a deeper investment in creativity, one grounded in simplicity and purpose-built engineering.

A Refined Look: The Evolution of Sigma’s Identity

Sigma’s updated visual identity reflects its core philosophy. The brand’s new wordmark and symbol retain the Greek letter Σ, honoring Sigma’s heritage while introducing a refined design. This update will gradually appear on packaging, digital platforms, and marketing materials. The change highlights the company’s focus on craftsmanship and the extensive expertise behind each product, reinforcing Sigma’s longstanding commitment to its roots in Aizu, Japan.

This shift arrives alongside the debut of Sigma’s Art Projects Initiative. Collaborations with artists like Sølve Sundsbø and Julia Hetta mark a renewed focus on supporting the creative process, not only through tools but through inspiration.

The Sigma BF doesn’t follow trends. It ignores them entirely. This full-frame mirrorless camera strips away excess and focuses on essentials. In hand, it’s not like any other photographic tool. With a 24.6MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 230GB of internal storage, hybrid autofocus, and a solid aluminum chassis milled from a single block, the BF is engineered with precision and intent.

Design and Ergonomics

The BF’s shape is striking—sharp lines, geometric intent, and zero unnecessary ornamentation. It’s a trapezoidal block, sculpted and balanced with care. The unibody aluminum build delivers a monolithic feel. There are no visible seams, no break in continuity—only surface transitions executed with near-microscopic precision.

This isn’t a camera that disappears in your hand. It transforms in your grip. The textured metal pattern on the grip section creates friction without discomfort. It doesn’t attract lint or degrade with sweat. Despite the stark visual language, the camera rests securely and naturally. Palm and thumb rests are integrated into the form itself, not bolted on as afterthoughts.

Both the black and silver finishes are handled with restraint. The matte black absorbs light softly, ideal for low-profile shooting, while the silver variant—the one Sigma shipped per our request—creates a sculptural feel paired with I Series lenses. The aluminum body warms to the touch quickly, encouraging a connection rather than distancing the user from the tool.

At around 650g with battery, the BF lands in that sweet spot of heft and carryability. Whether walking the streets or working on longer handheld shoots, it holds its position without needing constant adjustment.

Simplified Interface with a Focused Layout

The BF features just five physical buttons. No mode dial. No clutter. Power, shutter release, playback, menu, and a center button on the haptic directional pad. Each one is pressure-sensitive and offers responsive feedback without clicky overstatement. The shutter release delivers a perfect half-press tension and a quiet, yet reassuring, release.

The layout supports your muscle memory—power under your thumb, playback just above the natural rest line, and control functions centered. After just a few minutes of shooting, it becomes second nature.

A slim status monitor located near the rear screen displays current adjustments in real-time, without disrupting your composition. When framing, the rear screen stays intentionally clean. Only the essentials show—no histogram clutter, no redundant overlays. The idea is simple: keep your eyes on the shot, not the settings.

Instead of switching through PASM modes, the BF grants direct control over shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, and color mode. Each is available instantly. You’re not drilling through layers—you’re adjusting the fundamentals of photography. This approach clearly speaks to photographers who want a machine that supports their decisions, not menus.

Real-World Handling and Lens Pairing

With Sigma’s compact I Series primes, like the 50mm F2 DG—our review unit—the BF feels cohesive. The silver-on-silver pairing makes a design statement without being overly loud. The body’s balance remains stable, and the tripod mount aligns with the lens’s optical axis, which is key for accurate panorama stitching and long-lens setups.

While I’ve only had the unit for minutes, I anticipate that even after hours of shooting, hand fatigue won’t be an issue. The grip’s tactile pattern doesn’t irritate, and the chamfered edges prevent pressure points during extended sessions. The BF isn’t trying to vanish. It stays present but never gets in your way.

There’s no EVF, and Sigma makes no apologies for it. The BF asks you to look at the world differently—literally through a screen. It’s a decision that won’t work for everyone, but for street shooters and those composing at waist level or at low angles, it feels natural and refreshingly direct.

Thermals, Power, Storage—and What’s Next

The aluminum body is said to dissipate heat efficiently—something I’ll need to test out over the next week. So far, during brief use, it has remained stable to the touch. The internal 230GB storage eliminates the need for SD cards and supports over 14,000 JPEG images or approximately two hours of 6K video. USB-C handles fast transfers and charging. It’s an ecosystem with less friction, which is the real story behind the BF—less friction, more shooting.

I have a very short two-week period to put this camera to the test, and I plan to make the most of every minute to do so. The Sigma BF doesn’t compete on feature checklists. It doesn’t chase trends. It sets its own agenda—tactile, minimal, intentional. You don’t pick it up for specs. You use it because it makes you feel connected to the process again.

It’s not for everyone. And that’s the point. Sigma created a camera for those who care about how a camera feels, looks, and interacts with the creative process. Once you experience it, returning to plastic shells and bloated menus feels like trading down. The BF offers a different kind of freedom—the kind that reminds you why you picked up a camera in the first place.

Stay tuned for my full review.

Polaroid has just released a new instant photography camera that’ll bring a smile to the face of passionate clickers. The company claims the Polaroid Flip is the ultimate point-and-shoot instant camera, and given its features, we second that. The latest analog shooter’s folding design is inspired by the cameras that marked the glorious past, including the Polaroid OneStep 600 introduced in 1983.

The instant camera is ideal for people who are used to taking a lot of shots with their smartphone, or beginners who want to ease into their hobby of point-and-shoot photography. Polaroid Flip will be available for members starting today, and you can create an account with them right away if you are an eager buyer. Otherwise, you can grab the shooter from April 29 via online stores, and on May 13 from other retailers for $200.

Designer: Polaroid

Polaroid Flip reintroduces the flipable design that folds down the big flash to protect the lens when the camera is not in use. In fact, the adaptive flash is one of the most powerful (able to illuminate the subject over 14 feet away) that the company has ever offered on its instant cameras. The flash intensity can be adjusted easily to avoid overexposure at near distance. The camera comes with a four-lens system – including a close-up lens for distances up to 0.65 meters, near-field for 0.85 meters or lower, mid-field to shoot 1.2 meters, and far field for 2.5 meters distance – that rotates inside the housing. Based on the scene and the distance of the subject, the appropriate lens is chosen, and Polaroid claims the shots are equally good with better sharpness, depth of field and vividness.

What interests me the most in Flip is the sonar autofocus system that makes use of sonar waves to determine the distance of the subject from the lens and the exposure levels. If the subject is too far or too close, they are alerted with a flashing red light as a part of the ‘scene analysis’ feature, to make the necessary adjustments. This ensures the final shot is desirable and the compatible Polaroid i-Type and 600 film is not wasted. The user can, of course, take charge of the settings like exposure or self-timer via the compatible app. Other features of the camera include the ability to shoot double exposure shots for a crisper output and remotely control the camera from a distance.

The Flip camera will come equipped with a USB-C rechargeable battery, so you don’t have to worry about running out of juice, as you can carry an extra battery for peace of mind. According to Polaroid, this camera embraces real-life moments by connecting to life’s best moments. With eight pictures in “a pack that will connect to life far more than 800 digital ones,” the camera’s analog shooting experience will bring real-life moments to life with instant printed versions.

NASA’s legacy isn’t confined to space exploration; it’s deeply woven into the fabric of our daily lives. From memory foam mattresses to scratch-resistant lenses, the agency’s innovations have a knack for transcending their original purpose. Now, envision a camera sculpted by NASA’s design philosophy, tailored not just for terrestrial photography but for the vast expanse of space. What form would such a device take?

Enter the NASA Camera, a concept camera with a modular architecture, allowing astronauts to customize it with components like a protective frame, ergonomic handles, a transmission antenna, built-in flash, interchangeable lenses, and a secure wrist strap. This modularity ensures that the device can be tailored to diverse mission requirements, given the unpredictable nature of space exploration.

Designer: Nathan Petiteau

Drawing inspiration from the robust design of satellites and spacecraft modules, the camera’s aesthetics are both utilitarian and evocative. Its materials and finishes echo the gear used in extra-vehicular activities, ensuring durability in the harsh environment of space. Recognizing the challenges posed by bulky astronaut gloves, the camera features handles and a wrist strap designed to provide optimal grip, ensuring that capturing the cosmos remains a seamless endeavor. Given the fairly monochrome nature of anything space-related, this one gets a Stormtrooper-esque white and black colorway too, giving it high impact as well as high contrast.

To translate the concept into reality, a full-scale 3D-printed prototype was developed. This tangible model encompassed all components of the modular system, allowing for rigorous testing of assembly, handling, and overall usability. Such prototyping underscores the meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the camera isn’t just a theoretical marvel but a practical tool ready for the rigors of space.

The interface is a masterclass in user-centric design. Displaying real-time critical information, it offers specialized settings to adjust for the extreme variations in brightness and contrast encountered beyond our atmosphere. The controls are intuitive, facilitating swift navigation even in low-gravity or low-visibility scenarios. This ensures that astronauts can focus on the moment, rather than wrestling with cumbersome settings.

Modules are designed for zero-gravity, with more robust fixtures that allow them to stick on no matter what. Potentially, they could work in environments with higher gravity than earth too, where objects experience more strain because of the planet’s magnetic pull. The panels around the modular flash come with the same foil material seen in space blankets. Aside from that, the entire design adopts a fairly space-leaning clean aesthetic that feels very on-brand for America’s premier space organization.

OBSBOT has just unveiled something truly groundbreaking in the camera world. The new OBSBOT Tail 2 emerges as the world’s first three-axis PTZR (Pan, Tilt, Zoom, Rotate) 4K camera, designed to transform how creators capture their vision.

Designer: OBSBOT

What makes this innovation significant? Everything about it challenges conventional camera design. The Tail 2 combines sophisticated AI tracking capabilities, professional-grade imaging, and unprecedented movement flexibility in a remarkably compact form factor. This combination opens up entirely new creative possibilities for solo creators, filmmakers, educators, and live event producers who need professional results without extensive equipment.

The technology behind this camera represents a genuine leap forward for the industry. Let’s dive into what makes it special.

Reimagining Camera Movement with Three-Axis PTZR Design & Professional-Grade Imaging Capabilities
The Tail 2 introduces an exclusive gimbal-based design with a groundbreaking 90° rotation capability that enables fluid cinematic motion and true vertical 4K shooting without quality loss.

This rotation axis—the “R” in PTZR—addresses the needs of content creators working across multiple platforms. When shooting vertical content for social media, the Tail 2 maintains full 4K/60fps quality in vertical orientation with no cropping and no compromises.

The camera’s auto-leveling system ensures perfectly horizontal footage regardless of mounting position or movement. The R-axis stabilization delivers ultra-smooth motion with minimal angular jitter (±0.003°), providing cinema-grade movement quality in a compact package.

Image quality receives equal attention in this innovative device. The Tail 2 features a 1/1.5″ CMOS sensor with an impressive 50 megapixels (8192×6144 effective pixel resolution) paired with a 12-element optical lens system. This powerful combination captures 4K video at 60fps or 1080p at 120fps for smooth slow-motion footage.

The 2μm pixel size works alongside AI-optimized processing and all-pixel phase detection autofocus (PDAF) to ensure superior clarity even in dimly lit environments. This makes the Tail 2 valuable for indoor events, stage performances, and studio setups where lighting conditions present challenges.

The camera’s zoom capabilities transform how creators can capture their subjects without physically moving the equipment. With 5x optical zoom and extended digital zoom options, a vlogger can start with a wide establishing shot of a room and then smoothly transition to a detailed product close-up without a single step. This flexibility proves invaluable for solo creators who previously needed camera operators or multiple setups to achieve similar results.

Content creators will appreciate the practical benefits of this zoom range. Educational presenters can seamlessly shift from showing full whiteboard content to highlighting specific details. Livestreamers can maintain perfect framing regardless of their movement within the space. Documentary filmmakers might capture subtle emotional reactions without intruding on their subject’s personal space.

The AI Auto capability takes this convenience further by intelligently adjusting framing for both close-ups and wide shots. This smart system learns what makes a compelling composition and applies those principles automatically. A podcast host recording an interview can focus entirely on the conversation while the camera handles all framing decisions, creating dynamic visual interest throughout the session.

Low-light performance receives significant attention with the f/1.8-f/3.0 aperture range. Event videographers working in dimly lit venues no longer need to compromise between mobility and image quality. HDR capabilities and dual native ISO mean wedding videographers can capture both the details of a white dress and the ambient mood lighting without losing either to over or underexposure. The camera adapts to challenging lighting scenarios that would typically require extensive supplemental lighting or post-production work.

AI That Thinks Like a Camera Operator & Built for Professional Integration

At the heart of the Tail 2 sits AI Tracking 2.0, powered by an enhanced Deep Neural Learning Network Algorithm that mimics the intelligence and decision-making of a professional camera operator. The built-in AI processor delivers the computing power of trillions of operations per second, enabling sophisticated real-time tracking and framing decisions.

The system offers several innovative tracking modes. A new “Only Me” mode ensures the camera focuses exclusively on a single subject—ideal for keynote speakers or solo performers. For more dynamic scenarios, the Group Tracking Mode can follow multiple subjects simultaneously, perfect for panel discussions, worship services, and on-stage presentations.

The AI goes beyond just tracking humans. It can identify over 30 animal species and 200+ objects, making it versatile for nature documentarians, product reviewers, and educators demonstrating physical objects.

Speed and movement customization add another layer of creative control. Five adjustable tracking speeds and independent pan/tilt customization allow creators to fine-tune movement based on the specific requirements of each scene. The AI Auto capability intelligently adjusts framing for both close-ups and wide shots, offering a versatile 3-24x zoom range ideal for professional applications.

The Tail 2 integrates seamlessly into professional production environments through comprehensive connectivity options and protocol support.

The camera works with industry-standard protocols, including NDI, RTMP, RTSP, 3G-SDI, Pelco-D, Pelco-P, and FreeD—making it immediately compatible with AR/VR production, live streaming setups, and multi-camera environments. Physical connections include full-size HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0, Ethernet, RS-232, and Wi-Fi 6 support.

Wireless capabilities include Wi-Fi 6 (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax) with impressive transmission ranges—140 meters on 2.4GHz and 80 meters on 5.8GHz bands. Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity rounds out the wireless options, operating in the 2.400-2.4835 GHz frequency range with transmitter power under 14 dBm.

This connectivity extends to OBSBOT’s own ecosystem, with compatibility across their software suite, including Obsbot Start for quick setup, Obsbot Live for multi-cam streaming, OBSBOT Center for centralized control, and OBSBOT Talent for an all-in-one live streaming hub.

Practical Design for Real-World Use & Creative Control Without Complexity

Theory means little without practical application, and Tail 2 thoughtfully chooses design choices to address the real-world needs of content creators.

The physical dimensions are remarkably compact at 97.5×103.5×155mm when powered on and 97.5×103.5×172mm when powered off. Weighing just 1.066kg, the camera maintains a balance between stability and portability. The 5000mAh lithium-ion polymer battery (38Wh, 7.6V) provides up to 5 hours of continuous shooting—sufficient for most production scenarios without requiring constant power management.

Small but significant features like the dual-color tally light for recording status indication and the standard ¼” mounting interface demonstrate OBSBOT’s understanding of production workflows. These details make the difference between a technically impressive device and one that integrates smoothly into creative processes.

Advanced technology often brings complexity, but the Tail 2 focuses on making its capabilities accessible through intuitive controls.

The Composition Line feature allows users to reposition their target within the frame to achieve an ideal composition based on their creative vision. Distance-extended gesture control enables hands-free operation, enabling users to activate AI tracking, adjust zoom, and start recording through simple hand gestures.

For interview and presentation scenarios, AI-powered face framing automatically adjusts composition based on facial orientation, ensuring natural and engaging framing without constant manual adjustment.

Social media has turned almost everyone into content creators, whether it’s taking photos for food blogs or vlogging their latest adventures. Smartphones are the most common tools used in this field since they’re always in our pockets anyway, but even these devices have become filled with so many features and distractions. Rather than inspiring creativity and enjoying the moment, smartphones and especially digital cameras burden users with their complexity.

The kyu camera stands apart from traditional vlogging equipment through its commitment to mindful content creation. Rather than overwhelming users with endless recording options and complicated settings, this device strips away unnecessary features to focus on what matters most – the genuine connection between the creator and their surroundings. Its revolutionary approach transforms the vlogging experience from a technical challenge into an intuitive extension of human perception, allowing users to remain present while still documenting their experiences.

Designer: Matsuura Yasuaki (Kyu)

Designed with meticulous attention to ergonomics, the kyu camera fits comfortably in your palm, ready for immediate use whenever inspiration strikes. The symmetrical form factor accommodates both left and right-handed users, eliminating awkward handling that might otherwise disrupt the creative flow. This design ensures that when you spot something worth capturing, nothing stands between you and preserving that fleeting moment except the simple press of a single button.

The magic of kyu lies in its enforced constraints. Each user is limited to recording 27 nine-second clips daily. While this might initially seem restrictive, these boundaries serve a profound purpose in cultivating intentional content creation habits. By imposing these limits, the camera encourages users to develop a more discerning eye, recognizing and prioritizing truly meaningful moments rather than mindlessly documenting everything in sight without purpose or direction.

What truly distinguishes the kyu camera from competitors is its seamless post-capture experience. After recording your daily clips, the device automatically stitches them together into a cohesive vlog, eliminating the often tedious editing process that discourages many aspiring content creators. This feature, combined with Spotify integration for soundtrack addition, transforms what would typically be hours of post-production work into an effortless process that happens behind the scenes while you continue living your life.

The minimalist aesthetic of the kyu camera reflects its underlying philosophy, that technology should enhance our experiences rather than dominate them. Its pocket-sized dimensions ensure you can carry it everywhere without the bulk associated with traditional vlogging equipment. This constant accessibility removes the common excuse of not having recording equipment ready when memorable moments occur, allowing spontaneous capture of life’s unexpected joys and discoveries.

For content creators struggling with consistency, the kyu camera offers a refreshing solution to creative burnout. Limiting daily recording capacity prevents the overwhelming pressure to constantly produce content that plagues many vloggers. Instead, it fosters a sustainable approach to content creation where quality consistently trumps quantity, helping creators maintain their authentic voice without sacrificing their enjoyment of the experiences they’re documenting.

The kyu vlogging camera emerges as a breath of fresh air for content creators seeking authenticity in their craft. This innovative device challenges conventional filming approaches by limiting each video clip to just nine seconds, forcing users to capture only what truly matters. The philosophy behind this distinctive limitation reflects a deeper understanding of how we experience and cherish moments in our increasingly fast-paced digital landscape.

Thanks to the retro design craze, instant cameras are now popular even among young people who have never seen the original Polaroid. It has become hip to instantly print out photos with thick white borders and share them with friends or even strangers right then and there. These instant cameras have quite a number of limitations even compared to film cameras, but that’s actually a big part of their charm.

With modern technologies, however, much of that is rendered pointless, turning these cameras into glorified photo printers instead. This rather quirky device brings back the appeal of instant cameras and even adds a pinch of whimsical fun as well. It isn’t by coincidence, either, that it doesn’t even look like a camera but can be mistaken for the photo that comes out of those instant cameras instead.

Designer: Escura Camera (via Digital Camera Watch)

You know that universal gesture of forming a box with your index fingers and thumbs, trying to mimic the shape of a camera? That’s basically the idea behind InstantSnap, except you’re using what looks like an instant camera photo frame to do the, well, framing. This object, which produces a squarish photo, is well-known across the Internet, especially since the square format has long been favored by social media sites such as Instagram.

Mixing all those metaphors together, InstantSnap is a digital camera with an obviously unique design. The large transparent area in the middle is pretty much just an open-frame viewfinder and is the only way you can guess what the camera will be shooting. Yes, you can only guess, because there’s no immediate feedback to see the photo you just took. Unlike an actual instant camera, you can’t even print the photo directly and have to access the photos and videos either through the microSD card or through a USB-C connection.

While that might sound like a critical flaw, it’s actually part of the fun that InstantSnap brings to the table. You literally frame the scene and take a shot, not knowing how it will come out. There’s an element of mystery, surprise, and excitement, but it also makes you more thoughtful about each shot. If you only have one chance to do it, you’re more likely to make sure you get it right the first time.

InstantSnap is more of a toy than an actual tool for keeping memories, especially if you consider that it only has a 1.3MP sensor and a fixed shutter speed. It has a video recording mode, though you probably shouldn’t expect much from it. There is also a switch to include the white frame around the photo when it’s saved to the card, further adding to the realism of the instant film photo. And although the frame of the device itself is plain white, it can be customized to have some branding, such as the “Showa” variant that also has a retro effect applied to photos taken with it.

Thanks to the popularity of retro products like record players, instant cameras have also been experiencing a renaissance. There are now quite a few designs from different camera makers, but Polaroid is still the brand whose name became synonymous with this type of camera. As if to prove that it’s still in the game, the company just announced its latest pair of instant cameras that put the emphasis back on the simple joys of taking photos and immediately sharing them with others.

The 3rd-gen Polaroid Now and Now+ instant cameras offer modern conveniences like improved performance, a new two-lens autofocus system, and USB-C charging. At the same time, however, it mostly manages to keep the design just as simple as the iconic instant camera, avoiding the temptations of overloading the product with digital conveniences common in its peers. What you get is a camera that’s not only simple to use but better immerses you in the fleeting moment, making every press of the shutter count.

Designer:https://press.polaroid.com/246847-introducing-polaroid-now-now-generation-3 Polaroid

There is a certain charm to the ephemeral nature of instant cameras. Unlike film cameras that have negatives you can reprint over and over again, the original instant camera concept produces one and only one print for every photo you take, making each a rare and valuable item. Part of that character has been erased on modern instant cameras which are pretty much like portable photo printers. You can, after all, just print photos taken by your smartphone without taking a single shot from the camera itself.

The new Polaroid Now and Now+ Generation 3 manages to preserve the old-school experience without compromising on the image quality that today’s discerning users demand. Upgrades to the imaging hardware allow these cameras to take even sharper photos, especially with a new twin-lens autofocus system that chooses the right lens for your shot. It pulls all these off without having to resort to complicated apps or internal storage, which makes each photo taken a timeless and one-of-a-kind object.

The Polaroid Now+ Generation 3 does add smartphone connectivity, but not for apps or adding stickers and filters. It simply lets you remotely control the camera or set modes that tweak the camera settings, some of which are only available from the app. You still won’t see a preview of the shot on your phone, and the only way to get a digital copy of the photo is to scan it after printing. As for filters, you also do that the manual way with special colored glasses you can mount on the lens.

The third-gen Polaroid Now cameras also preserve the iconic design of their ancestors, with photos coming out of the bottom rather than the top-printing designs of modern instant cameras. Yes, that design is a little chunky and clearly retro, but it also makes it look more fun to use, almost like an old Fisher Price or View-Master toy. It helps make each moment and each photo taken more special, putting the focus on the experience rather than the printed product only.

“I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing,” Joanna Maciejewska once said – and while the Poetry Camera defies that very statement, it’s a perfect representation of how technology can help foster collaborative art between humans and AI. The Poetry Camera isn’t your average handheld instant shooter. Sure, it has a lens, and a shutter button, and it prints out stuff – but unlike Polaroid that prints pictures out on film, the Poetry Camera captures a scene, identifies its elements, and then uses AI to make a beautiful poem based on what the camera clicked.

The brain-child of Kelin and Ryan, the Poetry Camera is a toy that turns photography into something much more fun and experimental. Instead of composing powerful visuals by framing your shot perfectly the way a photographer does, you’re invited to click photos of subjects that make for great poetry. Click a funny photo of a friend, a photo of a squirrel with an acorn, or maybe a baby with a cute cap. The AI reads the photo, identifies the elements, and writes a short poem on it, using AI in a way that feels more fun and art-driven and less existential or scary.

Designers: Kelin ‘Caroline’ Zhang & Ryan Mather

Essentially, the Poetry Camera runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 chip, with a Camera Module 3 connected to an Adafruit Mini Thermal Printer. Connection to OpenAI’s API allows the camera to feed AI images, and have it generate poetry as a result. The setup is fairly simple (you can find the entire DIY kit on GitHub if you want to build your own), and it all fits inside this adorable 3D-printed enclosure with just two controls – a shutter button for clicking the photo, and a knob that lets you adjust the number of verses you want the camera to print. In a way, think of it as an ‘exposure’ dial that gives the AI more leeway to see smaller details and conjure up longer poems with more depth as a result.

The Poetry Camera is a pet project for now, as Kelin and Ryan aren’t preparing for mass production. Limited drops of the camera will be available to people who sign up for the newsletter on the website, although the price is unknown at the moment.

This is far from the first time we’ve seen AI make its way into indie camera projects. Back in 2018 (long before GPTs), Dan Macnish created a camera that doodles what it sees, while in 2023, we got the Paragraphica – a lens-less camera that used location and time data to create prompts that generated AI images. The Poetry Camera is, in ways, similar to the Paragraphica in the sense that it uses an AI to generate something new from an input. While Paragraphica did make images, like cameras are supposed to, the Poetry Camera turns scenes into sonnets, and if this is what the AI uprising will look like, count me in!
