]]>

We can probably easily tell at a glance what we’re drinking, especially if the cup or mug we’re drinking from is clear as glass. But what if that glass had a special trick that would literally spell out its contents? Sounds like a Harry Potter prop, definitely, and we’re probably decades away from such a smart piece of drinkware that can clearly label what you pour inside it. But as some would say, “fake it till you make it,” and these simple-looking clear glasses and mugs definitely try.

At first glance, they seem like normal transparent glasses, but once you pour milk or coffee, their magic starts to appear. It almost feels like they’re magically telling you which drink they’re holding, but once you realize the trick, you’re bound to smile at the silly yet effective mind games that these “text-changing” glasses play.

Designer: TOAL

It definitely sounds like a helpful feature to have a cup that tells you in bold letters what’s inside. Of course, if the cup is transparent anyway, it becomes more of a fun detail that adds a little flavor to your favorite drink. Figuratively, of course. These glasses and mugs have Japanese words for coffee and milk written on them, and only one or the other is visible, depending on which one is actually poured inside.

It’s really a simple visual trick that takes advantage of the natural colors of these two drinks. Coffee is normally black or dark brown, depending on the brew, so the dark “Milk” text vanishes when the glass holds coffee. The opposite is true for white milk, making the white “Coffee” label invisible. And when you mix the two together? You see both words appear, indicating a mixture of both liquids.

Of course, the illusion breaks down if you pour in any other color of liquid or if the glass’s contents go below these words. It’s not a trick that will completely amaze your guests, but it’s good enough to have a laugh or draw a smile to anyone who figures it out. Plus, it’s always fun to watch one or the other word disappear, only to reappear when you mix coffee and milk.

As for the drinkware itself, it’s pretty standard clear glass, though there are different designs that use heat-resistant glass. That sadly means you can’t use the same vessel for both hot and cold drinks, though having a collection of these doesn’t seem to be a drawback. The text is printed using silk printing, which the brand says is more durable than either UV or pad printing but could still peel off if a strong impact is applied to the printed area.

There are two kinds of beer drinkers: those who prefer to just drink it straight from the can or bottle and think that other ways of drinking it is sacrilege, and those that prefer to have it poured out in a glass so they can enjoy the taste more as they clink and drink with others. If you’re the latter kind of beer drinker, you might also have particular rituals you enjoy, like how the beer is poured into the glass, what kind of glass you’re drinking from, and also how you drink “cheers”, “prost” or “kanpai” when you’re drinking with friends. There are also those who want to have a unique kind of glass to drink from that would enhance the beer drinking experience.

Design: Nendo for Saporro

If you’re the latter kind of beer drinker, you’d want to have a perfectly designed glass to enjoy your Saporro Black Label beer. They partnered with design company Nendo, who also previously made The Perfect 3Way Glass, to create The Perfect Cheers Glass. It is a pair of glasses that are made of crystal. These are actually manufactured in an atelier in Crystal Valley in the Czech Republic. It’s a place known as the center of glass manufacturing and they have an accuracy of 0.1 mm.

The Perfect Cheers Glasses allows you to enjoy your glass of Black Label beer with not one or two but four out of your five major sense. You can taste the beer of course and smell it as you drink it from your glass. There’s also the added senses of sight as the crystal clear glasses give you a clear view of your drink and the stems are shaped like bells. Lastly, you get an added sound element to your drinking because when you clink them together, you get a bell-like tone to punctuate your “cheers”.

These pair of glasses aren’t for sale though. You’ll have to enter Sapporo’s raffle to get a chance to win. You have to be a Club Black Label member and purchase eligible products, specifically the Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label. You get 1 point for the 350 ml and 2 points for the 500 ml and you just have to scan and upload the receipt for the eligible products. They’re giving away 4,800 pairs of The Perfect Cheers Glasses and the prizes will be shipped around mid-July 2025.

Most of us probably still haven’t recovered from Christmas and related holidays just yet. We’ve just recently taken down most decorations and pretty soon we’ll be engulfed with everything Valentine’s. And also, it’s never too early to start thinking about Easter since in about two months or so, we’ll be celebrating that special day. While not everyone of course believes and celebrates that holidays, there are related designs and products that everyone can still enjoy, especially if it’s about gathering and celebrating the moments together.

Designer: IKEA

Swedish brand IKEA is probably one of the first brands to announce or release Easter-related products. Their TJÄRLEK collection celebrates not just this season but also spring, color, warmth, and everything whimsical. Most of the items in the collection carry soft colors particularly pastels, floral patterns, and of course, since it is Easter after all, you have bunny-inspired designs. You get glassware, textiles, and hand-painted watercolors as part of the collection which celebrates not just your holiday celebrations but can add some fun and color all throughout the year or whenever you feel like it.

For the bunny-inspired elements, you have a bowl with a lid and an egg cup, which can serve as bunny decorations when you’re not using it for their functional purposes. You also have a colorful branch which is purely for decoration and you can change and add decorations depending on the season. The hanging ornaments (set of 6) come in colorful colors as well. There are also glasses in pastel colored stems, flower-shaped side plates, bowls, egg cups, and baking cups, and some round, pastel-colored vases. You also have the hand-painted and colorful place mats and paper napkins, with the latter also having floral-designed ones.

If you have all of these items in your dining table, living room, and whatever space you need them to be, then you’ll have a fun, colorful, and playful aesthetic. You don’t have to actually celebrate Easter but if this is your kind of design and if you love everything IKEA, this is a collection that you wouldn’t mind having. The playful and fun designs to the TJÄRLEK collection may be the fun look that you will welcome after all the red hearts and flowers we’ll be seeing this February.

Very few people probably have problems thinking about what to use a drinking glass for after the party’s over. Most will probably just put them away in some cupboard or closet until the next social gathering requires their use. It’s definitely not a big deal, but maybe you have, at one point in time, stopped to wonder if that’s really all there is to drinkware. As it turns out, it isn’t.

Trying to redefine drinking glass design by giving it a second job, these simple-looking vessels serve different functions depending on whether it’s right side up or upside down. A drinkware when upright and a candle holder when flipped, the design gives the glass something to do when it’s not in use. And no, that doesn’t mean putting a tealight candle inside the glass, making it unhygienic and potentially damaging.

Designer: Traga

There are probably some instances when candles are indeed placed inside these small drinking glasses, which can actually look enchanting and romantic to some extent. That, however, also means the end of the glass’ life as a drinking glass, which unnecessarily limits its function to one or the other. You can have both, as proven by this rather unusual drinkware. And the solution isn’t even that complicated.

At first glance, the Podio Cup looks nothing out of the ordinary, just a small drinking glass with an uncharacteristically tall base. That base, however, turns out to be hollow, so that when you flip the glass over, it becomes a vessel of its own. It’s a small container, of course, but just the perfect size for a tealight candle. Simple and elegant, it gives the glasses added value even when you don’t have guests over.

These glasses also have another somewhat hidden talent. You can stack the glasses together while upside down, and the sides will never touch each other because of the small gap between each glass. This prevents them from scratching each other while also creating an eye-catching totem-like arrangement that will surely get your guests talking. You never have to keep and hide these glasses away ever again.

The glasses are crafted using borosilicate, which makes them perfect for both cold juices and espresso shots as well. The bodies are clear and completely transparent, but the bases have different tinted color options. The latter gives an even more interesting visual with a flame, as the candlelight gets mixed with the colors, setting a different mood depending on which glass is used.

Jeans are a staple in most people’s wardrobes. The moment it starts to fray or fade (unless that’s part of your fashion statement), you either give it to someone else or just throw it away. There are those who donate it to organizations that upcycle or recycle but oftentimes, it just gets thrown in the trash. Since the material is strong enough, there are a lot of things you can do with it and this designer experimented with combining it with different materials to make it the main character.

Designer: Junghyun Kim

The Denim Project turned discarded denims into something that may last longer than if you’re wearing it. They were able to bundle and ground it and then combine it with various other materials like wood glue, plaster, and resin. What they were able to create are decorative plates which can serve as part of your aesthetic and decoration in the kitchen or living room. Well, technically you can also actually use it as plates for when you’re eating. If you’re an Asian mom though, those plates will remain on the shelf.

The decorative plates have a white and blue colourway since denim is of course colored blue. This color combination is pretty familiar to a lot of households especially those that like the aesthetics of The Great Wave of Kanagawa, a woodblock print by Japanese artist Hokusai. There are hexagonal plates that also can serve as trays while there are coaster-like smaller versions that have stands.

As the denim is reborn as these plates, they will have a longer lifespan than when they were used as clothes. Well, unless of course they’re dropped and broken but even those can be recycled and re-used.

This smartly designed set includes all the tools you need for eating outdoors, ensuring you’re never left with just a knife and no spoon halfway through your hike. The EATi Mag combines a spoon, fork, and knife, each held together with magnets to snap securely, minimizing space and reducing the risk of losing them. These aren’t just your average utensils. The spoon and fork can be combined using a tong adaptor to form tongs, while the knife transforms into a multitool.

This knife isn’t just for cutting; it also serves as a serrated knife, can opener, bottle opener, screwdriver, peeler, and even a pry bar. The utensil trio locks together seamlessly, creating a compact tool that fits neatly into its carry pouch, which cleverly doubles as a makeshift cutting board when you need to prep food. Everything locks together seamlessly, giving you a tool that is compact, organized, and genuinely useful.

Let’s be real—keeping track of all your utensils while out and about can be a pain. Its pieces stick together like magic, forming a tight bundle that saves space in your bag, cuts down on noise (goodbye clanging forks), and ensures you’re not stuck halfway up a mountain with only a spoon. It’s simple but effective, and if you’ve ever lost gear mid-adventure, you’ll appreciate it even more.

EATi Mag’s titanium construction isn’t just fancy—it’s functional. Crafted from pure titanium, EATi is not only durable but also incredibly lightweight and resistant to bacteria. Its robust design stands up to rough usage without a scratch, and it’s easy to clean, making it a joy to use repeatedly. Here’s why this is important: the durability means you can bash it around in the wild, and it’ll still work like new.

Being lightweight means you can forget about lugging heavy gear; EATi Mag barely adds to your load. It’s rust-proof and non-reactive, unlike steel, so it won’t mess with the taste of your food or corrode over time. The hygienic nature of titanium, which naturally resists bacteria, is a major win for outdoor dining. Basically, it’s tough, easy to clean, and feels great to use—everything you want in gear designed for the outdoors.

Plus, by choosing EATi over disposable cutlery, you’re helping reduce plastic waste, making it a sustainable choice that can last a lifetime. This travel-friendly gear, designed to keep your backpack light and organized, is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. It has already surpassed its funding goal and continues to gain support with less than a week remaining. For as little as £49, you can pledge and secure your own EATi Mag, with shipping expected to begin in April 2025.

In the world of outdoor adventures, where every ounce counts and efficiency is key, the EATi Mag stands out as a testament to thoughtful design and practical functionality. ]]>

If you’re a regular seeing person, you probably don’t have an issue when it comes to recognizing the cutlery placed on the table, whether you’re eating in or dining out. But for those that are visually impaired, it can sometimes be a challenge. You can’t really recognize the cutlery by touching the handle. You need to touch the head but it can lead to some hygiene issues.

Designer: Ho Hyun Lim

Tactil is the concept for a cutlery set that is created specifically for those that are visually impaired. The problem it wants to solve is to let people know what cutlery they are picking up just by touching the handle, not needing to touch the head of the spoon, fork, or knife to know what they are without risking getting infections.

The basic idea is to add tactile lines to the back of the cutlery which will give intuitive feedback to the user. The character lines on the handle are designed according to the utensil it is. The spoon has a gently raised curve since it is used to scoop food. The form meanwhile has indented holes since it mostly does the piercing action. Lastly, the knife has a sharp, linear pattern to symbolize the slicing motion you do with it.

The three are of course the most basic cutlery you would need. Now the challenge would be if you’re at a multiple-course dinner where you need to use more kinds of cutlery. There could of course be more character lines but also more things for people to memorize.

]]>

There are probably two kinds of wine drinkers in the world: those who know everything about the age, composition, and other things that you need to know about the bottle you’re drinking; and those who just like the taste of the bottle they’re consuming. More often than not, I’m of the latter but sometimes I also like knowing how old the wine I’m drinking is.

Designer: Semin Park

If you’re just a casual wine drinker, you will probably appreciate this concept for your bottle. The Wine Stopper is a, well, wine stopper, that is designed to look like an analog clock. This is because it’s meant to be a symbol of the particular bottle of wine’s ageing process, even though it’s really just a design and not an actual indication of the age.

We all know that a bottle of wine changes flavors and aromas the longer it stays unopened. There is also a “perfect time” to open it and finish it off. This wine stopper is something you can use to fully experience the aging cycle of your wine, at least symbolically. It has a traditional analog dial that tells you the maturation date when the bottle can best be experienced.

We assume that the “clock” is manually placed on the aging date side and also the best taste “hour”, whether it’s for red wine, white wine, or sparkling wine. It’s an interesting way to know a bit more about your wine before drinking it all away.

Sometimes, at the end of a long and stressful day, the only thing that I can think of eating is a cup of instant noodles bought from my neighborhood convenience store. It’s best eaten with a pair of chopsticks while slurping down the soup but there are times when there are no chopsticks around and you have to make do with a fork, which isn’t the most convenient.

Designer: Nissin

Nissin is one of the main proponents of instant noodles culture with their ubiquitous Cup Noodle products. They’re now making it more fun and easier to eat your favorite noodles with the Ika Fork or the Squid Fork (ika is of course Japanese for squid). It solves the problem of your noodles slipping out of your ordinary plastic fork’s grasp by redesigning the fork and also making it unique and fun.

The fork is designed to look like a real squid, with actual details of the cephalopod included in the utensil. It’s around 8 inches in length and made from heat-resistant materials that can withstand really hot noodles up to 100 degrees Celsius. It prevents your noodles from slipping so you can enjoy the cup without being annoyed.

It’s designed for the cup noodles but you can also use it for other food things that require a fork. It’s included in a limited-edition set which has several Cup Noodles flavors and can be ordered through Nissin’s official store and Amazon Japan.
