Healthcare systems around the world are under pressure, and South Korea is no exception. With a single healthcare professional often responsible for 16 to 43 patients, providing personalized, one-on-one rehabilitation becomes a nearly impossible task. Legit, an AI-powered walking aid, steps in to meet this challenge, offering a smarter, more efficient way to deliver high-quality rehab training without overburdening medical staff.

Legit is designed to support patients as they approach the walking stage of recovery. It enables them to train independently while still benefiting from expert-level oversight. At the heart of its functionality is the seamless integration of artificial intelligence and wearable technology, allowing for real-time feedback, remote monitoring, and adaptive support tailored to each patient’s condition.

Designers: eunhye jangi jeongsuYun A Jang, and Yunjae Shin

Before training begins, patients attach a wearable EMG (electromyography) sensor patch to their thigh or calf. This patch detects muscle activity and communicates directly with the walking aid. The AI system analyzes this data in real time, adjusting training programs to suit the patient’s progress and condition. This not only personalizes the rehabilitation experience but also ensures that the patient remains safe and supported throughout their session.

Training with Legit isn’t passive, it’s purposeful. Patients follow an LED light beam projected onto the floor, which guides their stride and pace during walking exercises. The walker’s built-in display delivers intuitive feedback, showing real-time updates on speed, distance, and muscle engagement. It’s like having a digital coach on wheels, one that’s always responsive, never tired, and perfectly calibrated to the user’s needs.

For healthcare professionals, Legit is just as transformative. Through a centralized application, staff can manage multiple devices with ease. They start by selecting an available walker, checking its battery level, and turning it on. The system then displays the latest patient feedback, allowing medical staff to assess progress and identify any concerns. Based on this information, the AI suggests optimized training modes tailored to the patient’s rehabilitation stage. Once selected, these modes are linked to the device, and the session begins, all from a remote interface. This streamlined process enables minimal staffing without compromising the quality of care.

Legit allows patients to train within hospital track systems, where support is nearby if needed, but not constantly required. The walker adjusts in real time, helping patients fine-tune their gait, build strength, and regain mobility in a controlled, monitored environment. The combination of autonomy for the patient and oversight for the staff strikes a perfect balance, making rehab both accessible and effective.

More than just a walking aid, Legit represents a new mindset in rehabilitation—one where intelligent systems and human care work hand in hand. By reducing the dependency on constant physical supervision, it frees up valuable time for healthcare workers while empowering patients to take an active role in their recovery.

Sleep therapy shouldn’t feel like a medical procedure. That’s the philosophy behind ResMed’s AirTouch N30i, a nasal mask that reimagines what comfort means for CPAP users. Unlike traditional masks that can leave marks and cause discomfort, the N30i wraps your face in fabric so soft you might forget you’re wearing medical equipment. The innovative tube-up design eliminates that annoying hose dangling in front of your face, giving you the freedom to sleep on your side, stomach, or however you naturally drift off.

What makes this mask truly stand out is its revolutionary ComfiSoft cushion, the first nasal mask to feature silicone-coated fabric instead of just plain silicone. This breathable, moisture-wicking material keeps your skin cool throughout the night, reducing those sweaty moments that can wake you up or leave your face feeling clammy by morning. Think of it as wearing your favorite soft pajamas but for your nose: gentle, natural, and actually pleasant against your skin.

Designer: Resmed

The entire SpringFit frame comes fully wrapped in this luxurious fabric, creating a complete comfort system that moves with you. If you’re the type who tosses and turns, you’ll appreciate how the flexible frame gently hugs your face without digging in or creating pressure points. The fabric covering is also kinder to your hair, eliminating those awkward mask-head moments when you need to be somewhere early the next morning.

ResMed’s engineers clearly thought about the little things that matter during sleep therapy. The QuietAir diffused venting system disperses exhaled air quietly, so neither you nor your partner will be disturbed by that annoying whistling sound common in other masks. It’s a small yet thoughtful detail that can make the difference between tolerating your therapy and actually embracing it.

Getting up during the night no longer means fumbling with your entire setup thanks to the quick-release elbow that lets you disconnect from your tubing with one simple motion. Midnight bathroom trips no longer need to be a complex operation of unhooking and reconnecting various components in the dark. Just click, go, and reconnect when you return, maintaining your therapy without the hassle.

For those who’ve struggled with mask comfort or felt restricted by traditional designs, the AirTouch N30i represents a genuine breakthrough. The combination of a fabric-wrapped frame, breathable cushion, and freedom of movement creates an experience that feels less like medical equipment and more like a natural extensio

n of your bedtime routine. When therapy feels this comfortable, sticking with it becomes significantly easier.

It’s trendy nowadays to combine multiple related functions into a single design. Wireless chargers support multiple devices to save space, while some furniture transforms into a different kind of thing when not in use. The more you can group different but related functions together in a single product, the better the user experience could be, as long as they don’t overwhelm and confuse instead of helping them.

This “health tool” concept, for example, looks like a rather large digital thermometer, but its function clearly goes beyond simply telling your temperature. It also keeps not just your maintenance pills nearby but even your prescription slip, making sure that those essential aspects of your physical well-being are always close at hand when you need them. It even gives you a nudge when it’s time to take your daily dose, too!

Designer: Aleksandr Misiukevich

For those of us who have been diagnosed with certain medical conditions, keeping on top of our health goes beyond just being important and can be critical to our safety. People new to this situation have the tendency to forget to bring their pills with them or even the slip of paper they need to buy the medicine when they run out. The myriad apps in the smartphone market reminding people when to take their meds is proof that there is such an ongoing need for this kind of service, but your phone can’t remind you to bring your medicine with you.

The Health Tool is a concept for a device that brings those two separate but related functions together. On the one hand, the display that it uses for showing one’s temperature readout also functions as a reminder for people to take their pills and tablets at the right time. At the same time, the device itself also has compartments to actually hold the medicine inside. Just like a click pen, you simply push one end to pop out the tray when it’s time to take a dose.

The design also holds a somewhat secret pocket for those paper prescriptions. Fold it up and insert it at the back, ready to be pushed out by a slider when it comes time to replenish your supply. Given how thin the device is, however, one can only imagine how little space there would be for multiple sheets of folded paper.

The Health Tool’s small and compact design makes it trivial to bring anywhere you go. It can even hang from your pants with a hook or carabiner, though you’ll have to live with a large pill-shaped device hanging down your hip. The problem with its small and compact design, however, is that it would have limited capacity for pills and tablets. Its three compartments can hold only up to 12 pills, which should probably be enough for a few days’ worth of medication, but only if you only take a few each day.

Childhood often involves playing with slime. This popular toy, still enjoyed by many, offers a uniquely tactile and relaxing experience. Squishing, mixing, and manipulating slime provides a satisfying sensory outlet. The enduring appeal of slime is evident in its prominent online presence, with creators on platforms like TikTok and YouTube showcasing imaginative ways to play, and the popularity of slime ASMR further demonstrating its widespread appeal. But what if slime could do more than just provide sensory amusement? What if it could generate electricity?

Designer: University of Guelph

Scientists at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, have developed a slime-like material with precisely that capability. While not exactly “electric slime,” this innovative substance generates electricity when compressed or squeezed. Composed of 90% water, along with biocompatible and bio-based oleic (fatty) acid and amino acids, the prototype represents a significant leap in material science. Researchers discovered that the slime forms intricate structures at a microscopic level, allowing it to dynamically arrange and rearrange itself into various layered formations. This unique structural property is key to its electricity-generating ability.

This is not just something fun to play around with. The possibilities of what can be done with this electricity-generating slime is vast. For example, it can be used for bandages, making it easier for open wounds to heal faster since these will attract healing cells to the open wound. This can also be used for targeted drug delivery so that the medicine itself will be released when the structure changes. There are also some non-medical possibilities. You can use the material for household flooring so that it will produce green electricity when people are walking on it, somewhat similar to the Kinetic Dance Floor that Coldplay used in their concert tour. You can also create a squishy power bank to charge your devices.

While the potential is vast, this electricity-producing slime project is still in its early stages. Extensive research, rigorous testing, and further prototyping are crucial before it can be considered for medical or commercial use. The current prototype, with its somewhat slimy, mucous-like appearance, clearly needs aesthetic refinement. Beyond aesthetics, the challenge of scalable mass production looms large. Developing efficient and cost-effective methods for manufacturing this unique material in large quantities will be essential to its widespread adoption. Despite these hurdles, the innovative nature of this project and the breadth of its potential applications make it a fascinating area of research with the potential to revolutionize various fields.

Paper-based prescription bottle can help heal both patients and the planet

]]>

Thanks to its affordability and ease of production, plastic has pretty much made its way into every aspect of modern life. That’s not just limited to consumer electronics, furniture, or tableware, but even medicine and supplements all use this material. According to a 2019 study, there will have been over 9 million plastic pill bottles in the market by now, and many of these end up in landfills rather than recycled properly.

The trend these days in packaging is to substitute plastic with more sustainable materials, whether it’s recycled plastic or paper. That’s a bit harder to do in the medical field, which has stricter requirements than simply replacing plastic. Fortunately, it seems that the wait is finally over and the industry’s first sustainable prescription pill bottle made with 100% recyclable paper.

Designer: Parcel Health

Like with every bit of plastic, those iconic orange pill bottles look harmless, even though their contents may or may not be. While some have their prescriptions refilled using the same bottle, most others simply throw away theirs once they’re done. That’s especially true for supplements and pills that don’t get refilled but still come in plastic bottles.

Tully Tubes are trying to prove that there is no reason for this status quo to remain. Made from 100% sustainably sourced paper, the cylindrical bottles are certified by the US FDA, among other agencies, for use in food and medicine packaging. That said, not all of the bottle is made of paper. The child-resistant cap is still made from plastic, but at least uses post-consumer recycled plastic to offset the environmental impact.

Of course, you can’t just have a paper bottle and call it a day, and this design takes a few more steps to make it appropriate for this particular use. It is, for example, resistant to water, humidity, and heat, thanks to a three-layer construction. It is covered with a food-safe and compostable coating to protect it from water and the elements as well. And when it’s time to throw it away, a proprietary pull tab lets you separate the paper and plastic parts so you can safely compost the bottle itself while the cap gets sent to a recycling plant.

While such a revolutionary sustainable pill bottle complies with pharmaceutical requirements, it also opens up opportunities that regular plastic bottles don’t offer. Because they are disposable and recyclable, it is easier to invest in customizing the appearance of the bottles, like printing designs and characters to further engage customers, something companies might not be willing to do with plastic bottles because of their cost.

]]>

Medical science constantly seeks innovation, but the most profound breakthroughs often come from the intersection of technology and design. Nanoflowers are one such example, where function and form converge to create an elegant yet powerful tool in wound care and antibiotic treatment. Their intricate structure enhances drug delivery, combats antibiotic resistance, and accelerates healing more effectively than traditional antibiotics and treatments. While nanotechnology has long been a driving force in medicine, the introduction of nanoflowers brings a new level of bio-inspired design thinking that aligns with Yanko Design’s vision of intelligent, purposeful aesthetics.

What Are Nanoflowers and Their Natural Components?

Nanoflowers are tiny, flower-shaped structures made from metal oxides or a combination of materials. They are created through chemical processes such as hydrothermal reactions, which allow them to form their intricate, petal-like designs at the nanoscale.

This nanoflower enhances electrospun nanofiber bandages by providing antioxidant, antibacterial, and antibiofilm properties, improving wound healing and infection resistance.
Adapted from ACS Applied Bio Materials 2025, DOI: 10.1021/acsabm.4c00788

In wound care, nanoflowers play a crucial role in breaking down harmful substances that slow healing. Their unique shape provides a large surface area, which helps them deliver medicine more effectively. This means they can carry drugs to the exact location where they are needed, ensuring better absorption and treatment.

The petal-like structure of nanoflowers also helps them attach more securely to infection sites. This allows the medication to stay in place longer, making them more effective than traditional treatments in fighting bacteria and promoting faster healing.

Natural Components Used in Nanoflower Synthesis

Nanoflowers can be synthesized using a variety of natural components, ensuring biocompatibility and environmental sustainability:

  • Plant Extracts: Certain plants help create nanoflowers in an eco-friendly way. These include neem (Azadirachta indica), wild hop (Dodonaea angustifolia), mother of thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana), holy basil (Ocimum sanctum), and Indian rennet (Withania coagulans).
  • Enzymes: Scientists use natural enzymes like α-amylase to help form ZnO nanoflowers, making them more stable and effective in medical treatments.
  • Amino Acids: Natural amino acids interact with metal ions, such as copper, forming hybrid organic-inorganic nanoflowers with enhanced structural integrity.
  • Proteins: When combined with inorganic components like copper ions, proteins contribute to the stability and enzymatic activity of nanoflowers, making them ideal for biomedical applications.
  • Microbes: Microbes can also help create nanoflowers in a way that is good for the environment. This natural process mimics how nature efficiently builds structures, making it a smart and sustainable method for production.

Nanoflowers self-assemble through a bottom-up design process, similar to how architects and product designers refine materials and form to achieve functional efficiency. The synergy between inorganic and organic components creates an intricate framework that enhances their effectiveness, a principle often seen in contemporary industrial design where material choice directly impacts functionality. This self-assembling capability also mirrors the philosophy behind modular design—elements that can adapt, optimize, and scale based on need.

How Nanoflowers Help Wounds Heal Faster

Nanoflowers are being researched for their potential applications in treating chronic wounds, such as diabetic ulcers, where traditional treatments struggle to achieve consistent healing. These nanostructures improve wound care through multiple mechanisms:

  • Antibacterial Properties: Nanoflowers, particularly those made from tannic acid and copper(II) phosphate, demonstrate strong antibacterial activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial infections often complicate the healing process, making these properties crucial in wound care.
  • ROS Scavenging and Oxidative Stress Reduction: Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wounds can delay healing. MnO2-Au nanoflowers have shown superior catalytic activity in decomposing hydrogen peroxide, reducing oxidative stress, and creating a healthier wound environment.

Healing Diabetic Wounds with Nanoflowers
Gold-coated MnO₂ nanoflowers help heal diabetic wounds by reducing harmful molecules (ROS), improving oxygen levels, and supporting skin cell growth for faster recovery.

  • Tissue Regeneration: These nanoflowers enhance dermal fibroblast migration and collagen expression, accelerating wound closure and improving tissue quality.
  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: The anti-inflammatory effects of nanoflowers, particularly those composed of tannic acid and copper(II) phosphate, help reduce inflammation, which is a key factor in promoting healing.
  • Smart Drug Delivery Systems: Nanoflowers can be integrated into hydrogel-based wound dressings, allowing for controlled and sustained drug release at the wound site.
  • Biocompatibility and Cost-Effectiveness: Nanoflowers, particularly those made from natural compounds like tannic acid and copper(II) phosphate, are biocompatible and cost-effective, making them strong candidates for widespread clinical use in wound care.

Bringing Smart Material Science Into Medicine

Yanko Design frequently explores the future of smart materials in consumer products, but the same principles apply to medical advancements. The emergence of nanoflowers suggests a future where wound dressings and medical treatments integrate responsive design elements. Imagine a bandage embedded with nanoflowers that releases antibiotics only when bacterial activity is detected, similar to self-healing materials in consumer tech that repair minor damage without external intervention.

Material science has long played a role in wearable technology, from breathable fabrics to temperature-regulating textiles. The transition of these ideas into healthcare means nanoflowers could eventually be incorporated into flexible, biocompatible materials that seamlessly integrate into everyday life—turning treatment into an unobtrusive, natural process.

Future Directions in Nanoflower-Based Wound Healing

Researchers are exploring innovative ways to integrate nanoflowers into advanced medical applications:

  • Nanoflower-Coated Bandages: Scientists are investigating how bandages embedded with nanoflowers can enhance healing and prevent bacterial infections, including strains like E. coli.
  • Combination Therapies: Future studies may explore combining nanoflowers with nanofibers or lipid nanoparticles to create multifunctional wound care systems.
  • Personalized Medicine: The composition of nanoflowers can be tailored for patient-specific infections, ensuring targeted treatment with reduced side effects.

The Future of Nanotechnology and Medical Design

As nanotechnology advances, the lines between biology, material science, and design will continue to blur. In the same way, that cutting-edge product designs prioritize user experience, nanoflowers are shifting medical treatments toward more targeted, effective, and minimally invasive solutions. Their ability to function in harmony with biological systems hints at a future where healthcare tools are no longer separate interventions but integrated, intelligent elements of the body’s own healing process.

This evolution mirrors what Yanko Design has consistently highlighted—good design goes beyond aesthetics. It focuses on creating intuitive, efficient, and forward-thinking solutions. Whether in architecture, consumer electronics, or now, microscopic medical innovations, the principles remain the same: form must enhance function, and technology should work in harmony with nature.

Nanoflowers embody this philosophy, offering a glimpse into a future where medicine isn’t just about treatment—it’s designed for efficiency, sustainability, and seamless integration into daily life. Just as we appreciate the design of an exquisitely crafted object, it’s time to recognize the unseen beauty in medical advancements that harness intelligent design thinking at the molecular level.

People who struggle with hormonal conditions and other illnesses related to it usually have to go through a lot of tests and doctor appointments. There are times though when it’s a bit tough to work around in terms of schedules and even budget, even though monitoring your hormone levels are necessary. Good thing we’re getting options for more practical and easier ways to get some of these tests done.

Designer: Eli Health

The Hormometer is an at-home test that you can take and all you need is the kit, your saliva, and your smartphone. It’s a non invasive, portable, and accessible way to do hormone-testing from the comfort of your home, whether for medical or just personal reasons, like part of the hormone balancing trend we’re seeing on social media. There are two kinds of tests offered: cortisol for those regulating things like blood pressure, blood sugar, metabolism, and progesterone for those that are dealing with reproductive issues.

How the Hormometer works is pretty simple. You stick the thin cartridge in your mouth and lets it gather saliva for around 60 seconds. It looks like a pregnancy test or a COVID test kit. After collecting the fluid, you use your smartphone’s camera to let the app assess the results and you can see it as well on the window in the cartridge. The app will then provide recommendations for things related to sleep, fertility, athletic performance, stress, etc.

This device is FDA registered, which is different from the clearance or approval we normally see. The company says that it has a 97% (cortisol) and 94% (progesterone) agreement with FDA-approved lab tests. They’re also developing tests for testosterone and estradiol levels as well which they’ll release in the future.

The Hormometer’s future developments promise even greater flexibility and utility. By expanding its testing capabilities to include additional hormones, it aims to address a wider range of health concerns. This adaptability ensures that the device remains relevant and useful as users’ needs evolve, positioning it as a vital component of modern health management.

In essence, the Hormometer transforms how individuals approach hormone testing. By making the process more accessible, accurate, and user-friendly, it supports a healthier lifestyle and encourages proactive health management. As technology continues to advance, innovations like the Hormometer will play an increasingly important role in personal healthcare, offering practical solutions for everyday health challenges.
